Wheel of The Year - Summer Solsitce

Acknowledgment

For most of my life, the Summer Solstice was just “the longest day of the year,” something I’d hear mentioned in passing. And in my married life it is my father in-laws birthday, and then my mother in-laws birthday and then my moms birthday all within 4 days. My husbands parents have passed and we have particular things we do on those days. Alongside of that I want to acknowledge the Solstice. This is a time when the sun is at its peak when nature is vibrant, full, and alive. And yet, even in the fullness of light, there's an invitation to pause. The Summer Solstice, also called Litha in some traditions, reminds us to celebrate growth, embrace joy, and honor the warmth and abundance both around us and within us. This year, I’m choosing to slow down and notice the fullness of what’s already here.

Intention

The solstice is a natural moment to reflect on what has come to fruition and where we are being called to shine more fully. My intention this year is to celebrate the growth that has already taken root and to honor the light within me without rushing to the next thing. Maybe your intention is to let yourself be in the fullness, to bask in joy, or to realign with what truly lights you up. Naming that helps you connect with the season more meaningfully.

Events

You may find solstice celebrations in your area often centered around bonfires, drumming, or outdoor rituals but you don’t need a big event to connect. You can honor this turning point in a way that feels authentic to you. Whether you light a candle at sunset or spend the day in nature, you’re allowed to make this sacred in your own way.

Celebrate with Rituals

This is a season of light, movement, and outward energy yet even amidst all that activity, you can choose a practice that brings you inward. Think about what your body, mind, and spirit are craving right now. Let your ritual meet you there. This can be a solo moment or a shared celebration whatever feels aligned.

Ritual Ideas

🔥 Bonfire or Candle Ritual
Fire is central to solstice traditions. If possible, light a bonfire or even a single candle at sunset. As it burns, reflect on what you’re ready to celebrate and what you might need to release now that the days will begin to shorten again. Let the flame be both a celebration and a sacred reminder of impermanence.

🌻 Sun Gratitude Practice
Spend time outside soak in the sun (safely), walk barefoot on the earth, or simply sit and observe the warmth and fullness of the season. Offer gratitude to the sun for its light, growth, and energy. You might even journal: What am I thankful for that has blossomed this year?

🌾 Gather Wildflowers or Herbs
Pick flowers, herbs, or grasses and place them on your altar or in a bowl of water on your table. These represent the richness of the season and help you bring the outside in. This can also be part of a simple family ritual inviting everyone to name something they’re proud of this year.

🎉 Feast or Celebration Meal
Celebrate with seasonal foods berries, fresh herbs, grilled vegetables, or anything that feels vibrant and nourishing. Whether shared with others or enjoyed solo, create a moment of intentional joy. Toast to the light. Toast to your own growth. Toast to being here.

📜 Sun Letter or Solar Intention
Write a letter to your “summer self” the version of you who is bold, radiant, joyful, and unafraid. What would they remind you? What would they ask you to let go of? Keep it on your altar, in your journal, or under a candle as the season unfolds.

🌅 Sunrise or Sunset Reflection
Begin your day with the sunrise or close it with the sunset. Watch the light shift, and allow yourself to reflect on your own rhythm. What have I brought into the light? What do I want to hold sacred in this season of abundance?

Closing Thoughts

The Summer Solstice is a peak, a moment of fullness and warmth, but it’s also a doorway. After this, the light slowly begins to wane again. That doesn’t mean we need to rush toward autumn or contraction. It simply means we’re invited to savor the present moment. To notice. To celebrate. To honor what’s grown and to remember: our light is sacred, even when it flickers. However you choose to mark this day, may it be a celebration of who you are, what you've grown, and what still longs to bloom.
